JUBILATION! @ Leigh Sawmill Cafe
Apr 7 @ 5:00 pm

Jubilation at the Sawmill CafeJubilation is a unique beast, an a cappella gospel choir with a rock & roll heart.

They love what they do and audiences love them in return!

Born in Auckland in 2000, Jubilation is a virtual gospel supergroup including R & B legend Rick Bryant, entertainer extraordinaire Jackie Clarke and theatre supernova Jennifer Ward Lealand.

Bound not by common belief, but purely by the love of singing, this diverse ensemble includes professional musicians, teachers, actors, a yacht maker, a master builder and a lecturer in Russian.

Their eclectic repertoire of gospel, soul and blues draws from the songbooks of such luminaries as Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Curtis Mayfield, Blind Willy Johnson and the Staples Singers and ranges from the 1800’s to the present day.

A.U.R.A – SIL release tour @ LEIGH SAWMILL CAFE
Apr 12 @ 9:00 pm

A.U.R.A at the Sawmill CafeTo celebrate A.U.R.A’s forthcoming album release on March the 8th, A.U.R.A is excited to announce the SIL Tour, which kicks off with us.

Joined by Ben Lemi (French for Rabbits, Trinity Roots, Dawn Diver), Deanne Krieg (Ida Lune, Congress of Animals) and Samuel Austin on live duties, the SIL Tour will take in some of New Zealand’s favourite boutique venues, transforming them into the perfect backdrop to experience this psychedelic folk quartet.

In a statement, lead singer-songwriter Albert Mikolaj describes the latest single, Immensely I, as “An elegy for rebirth. The song is redolent of glowing psychedelic pop, almost deliberately subdued by a euphonic counter-point vocal pattern.”

Immensely I is driven by strong drum beats, punchy bass and Afro-infused guitar riffs, reminiscent of Paul Simon’s landmark release, Graceland. Mikolaj’s lyrics offer a very tender confession, saying of the verse, “It’s a raw reflection of my wild, unbounded core-self being slowly eroded by the emotional pain of growth.”

We are stoked to have A.U.R.A back to the mill! their last show here had us spellbound from start to finish – don’t miss this captivating act.

WELLINGTON SEA SHANTY SOCIETY @ LEIGH SAWMILL CAFE
Apr 27 @ 9:00 pm

W.S.S.S at the Sawmill Cafe

Wellington Sea Shanty Society, New Zealand’s Most ‘Sea-Worthy’ Shanty Group™, have been belting out original and traditional sea songs from around the globe since time immemorial (2012). Sailors and landlubbers from across the country have been battered by the rousing chorus of this two-man tempest of pure shanty. The W.S.S.S believe that ‘a shanty shared is a shanty savoured’, so they pass out shanty song sheets to one and all for people to sing along.

The W.S.S.S have toured New Zealand and France multiple times and are known for their raucous and participatory live shows. They have performed at Paimpol (one of the world’s largest shanty festivals), Splore, and a number of other festivals in NZ and France. They’ve released 3 albums: Now That’s What I Call Sea Shanties Vol I, Now That’s What I Call Sea Shanties Vol II and, Ahoy! (an English/French collab with friends Croche Dedans).

The W.S.S.S comprise Vorn Dont le Père Etait Marin, from the indie pop band Vorn, and Lake Davineer from electro pop band Lake South. Vorn is on squeeze box duties, while Lake strums the git-fiddle. Rousing harmonies and raucous foot-stomping abound!
